# Holding Deposit Scams

A letting agent has asked to transfer a holding deposit privately instead of going through OpenRent. How am I to be sure its secure and not a scam, or - a part from personal ID - what can they provide me to assure they are who they say they are?

There should be a written holding deposit agreement signed by the agent and stating how long it will be held and the circumstances under which it can be retained by them. If they’re not offering that then I don’t think I would trust them.

There is one Deposit scam spotted in Glasgow, Landlords requested deposit in his private account and now he removed ads and no answer. The flat which was available on rent is not rented flat, the family is owning the flat and living there. BEAWARE OF ONLINE Viewings AND DEPOSIT FRAUD.
