Is it normal for a landlord to charge a commission?

I got a reply from the landlord asking for my contact number. He then said his colleague would contact me to arrange a viewing. His colleague texted me to ask when I’d like to see the property and mentioned that they take a commission fee once the deal is done. Is this normal practice?

Hi @Tiago,

It’s unclear exactly what “commission fee” means here, so we’d recommend finding out exactly what they’re referring to.

If this does end up being a tenant fee they are expecting you to pay, you should know that this is unlawful under the Tenant Fees Act (2019) which you can read about here:

Perhaps they mean that the Landlord pays a commission / fee to the person doing the viewing. This would be ok. Its up to the Landlord if they wish to pay someone for such services.

As long, as this is not something that you are being charged.
