I have a property and two nannies are interested in renting it together. They are a couple. Both are employed as nannies with families, which is where I need some advice on. As they are employed with families, I’m worried if they will be able to afford the rent when they are between employment. It’s a bit different working for a company Vs a family..Also if they get a job as a live in nanny in future, that might complicate things. How easy / difficult it is to get permanent jobs as nannies? Is there anyone else who had nannies as tenants and what has been their experience?
Are they self employed?
If you’re worried, don’t do it, because the worry will always be there. You’ll always be wondering whether they are going to be trouble. You may be overthinking things, but that’s not the point. You’re never going to become an expert on the nanny business.
In my view only sign an agreement when you are really confident. Find a tenant with income prospects you understand.
Anyone who had nannies as tenants please? Would appreciate if you share your experience
Occupation is not a concern to me . Are they self employed or cards in ? Or do you not know ?
Are they ‘live in’ nannies or do they go and work for the day and then return to the rented property. If ‘live in’ somewhat strange they want to rent a place. If ‘live out’ ask for proof of earnings for the past year. this will tell you how likely they are to be able to afford the place.
They are employed and and earn well at the moment. That’s is not my question however.
What I’m trying to understand from others is if anyone who has ever rented to nannies and what how long did the tenant stay at the property? Of course that will be their experience only but it will help me.
Anyone can become unemployed, nanny or something else I do not see the difference . You could ask for their employment history
That’s not the question. If you don’t know please don’t respond.

If you are a family employing nannies presumably if they are any good you want to keep them, just like LLs hang on to a good tradesman, and also better for the child to have stability.
I’d think if they are any good and charge the right amount,.they shouldn’t take too long to find another position and there are always agencies so they probably always have the option providing temp cover through those if they are competent. Obviously they will have a better chance of finding something in a city than a small town or village as there will be more vacancies.

Typical Job Durations
- Average Tenure: 1 to 3 years is the most common duration. Many nannies stay until the youngest child starts school or nursery, at which point families often no longer need full-time home care. [1]
- Long-Term Placements: It is common for nannies to stay for 5 to 10+ years with a single family, growing alongside multiple children from infancy through their school-age years. [1]
- Short-Term/Temporary Roles: Some positions last only a few months (such as summer nanny jobs, temporary care after a parent’s surgery, or student placements lasting an academic year). [1]
Factors That Influence How Long a Job Lasts
- Ages of the Children: Care often ends or transitions when children enter full-time schooling.
- Family Changes: Relocation, parents changing jobs, or the birth of a new sibling can alter the need for care.
- Contract Terms: Professional nanny positions are usually bound by employment contracts specifying a fixed term (like 6 months or 1 year) with options for annual renewal. [1, 2]
Hi David240, that was quite helpful. Thanks for your help. In in the end decided against the couple. I had requested them to give me 2 days to let me make my decision but they immediately got quite aggressive in their tone hoping to argue and force me to say yes to them immediately. They had seemed quite reasonable during the viewing. It’s good that I saw this side of their personality now than later.
There are nannies and nannies. A decent norland nanny can earn 100k. A maternity nanny can earn 1000 + a week. So treat them like normal and listen to your gut feel.
Norland nanny (I had to look it up). 100k ? Is it too late to train me up? So the pair mentioned above could be on a good number.
I rented to a nanny, she stayed a couple of years, her partner was a bus driver. Not sure how any of this relates to your questions. Do references and take out rgi, ask for guarantor if referencing fails.
I employed a nanny years ago but now it’s unaffordable so frankly nanny’s now are paid a great deal. I personally wouldn’t worry at all, because they’re usually honourable good people doing a hard job so they’re usually very diligent individuals. Secondly, get a reference on their salary and employment situation from their employers. I think it’s hard enough for young people to get work and afford rent without landlords making it even harder. So trust their integrity and check out their situation. Don’t be frightened to ask difficult questions - most people respond well to the direct approach - and I’d say particularly people that work with children.
