Paying cash for rent

My son has moved into a shared house and is renting all bills included. We signed the paperwork, and the landlord gave bank account details for the payment of the part months rent but has now asked my son to pay his future monthly rent payments in cash with a signed ledger and receipt every month. Has anyone else experienced this and can he refuse? He is concerned about carrying the cash around especially as he works nights and long days. Thanks

I have 3 tenants who pay cash and have a rent book , the others all do a bank transfer. No need to carry the cash around . Use cash machine same day. Does it say in the contract how to pay? If it say by direct debit for example, then tenant can stick to this

Thanks - I’m checking that

Sounds dodgy like LL trying to avoid declaring it for tax or hiding from a partner being divorced or similar. Unless specified in tenancy agreement, just refuse, or agree only if LL agrees that a letter be sent to hmrc by tenant setting out the arrangement and rent reduced by 10% due to inconvenience. Then pay 10% of the rent in coins to make a point

Good luck

And to get from cash machine, presumably he would have to carry it around.. unless he uses some of it to buy some Red Bull.:woman_fairy:

saves me as a landlord going to the bank to get cash out . To those sceptics of a fiddle remember the taxman can just ask tenants how much rent do you pay, easiest thing to check earnings from this. No one is obliged to take a load of coins in change. Check " Legal tender amount for coins". Pay in coins men? A great way to annoy your landlord

Your Son can’t be forced to pay in cash if he doesn’t want to.

What does it say on the tenancy agreement. I would not like to have to pay by cash, its very inconvenient. Does the Landlord have to meet to collect the cash or you have to deliver the cash, and what about if you’re away on holiday. For me, I would just say its too inconvenient and that you don’t carry cash around, another inconvenience going to a cashpoint.

If it says in the tenancy agreement that a tenant has to pay by cash, it’s likely an unfair contract term and unenforceable.
