Question for landlords

Hey, first timetime posting so bare with me.

Today me and my partner went to view a property not direct from Openrent, but after we viewed it had a fantasic chat with landlord, got home to fill out the form, but then found out the landlord insurance says only 1 person can named and must earn 1.9k a month. Apparently they just can’t do joint applications, but in this day and age when have couples working part time each cant be included. To me its like the 1970 and before that woman must be in the kitchen and the man has to earn everything.

So why would a landlord go with such a company that resticts so much. Surely it would be better to have joint tenancy then landlord had 2 people could chase if rent wasnt paid.

Ps we did have someone who would be a guarantor but that was no good as mother does have some money and owns own home but dosnt get a 2.4k a month income.

I agree it doesn’t sound very sensible but if the landlord is determined to proceed on that basis, there’s not much you can do apart from look elsewhere. In my experience most landlord do consider joint income.

Ive never heard of that restriction, but even if its true, it shouldnt stop one person being a tenant and the other a named Permitted Occupier.

It stopped us as they said the main tenant needed at least 1.9k month income but me and my partner dont reach that singley (is that even a word lol)

But just curious is was permited occupier would i be legally responsible for the rent?

No, a permitted occupier has no rent liabllity. Look, this landlord is being silly and restrictive. Just find another property.
