Recovering deposit money

i rented a property few months ago. now my contract is finished but my landlord is not returning my deposit money back. what should i do now??

You need to describe in more detail what has happened to date. More info needed.

Have you moved out?
Did you give the required notice?
Move in and move out Inventory taken?
Is deposit lodged with a deposit scheme?
Has landlord been in touch about deposit?

If your landlord hasn’t communicated with you about the deposit, you should try to contact him in the first instance and if that fails, contact the deposit scheme.

@Abir_Hossin contact LL to get reason deposit not returned. If you caused damage or were in rent arrears, for example

If no answer from LL, ask the deposit scheme

If it wasnt protected in a deposit scheme, you may be able to claim it back plus up to 3 times the deposit amount. Ask citizens advice or shelter

If your landlord didn’t follow deposit rules - Citizens Advice

If your landlord does not protect your deposit - Shelter England

good luck

Sorry you’re dealing with this. A sensible next step is to write to the landlord asking for the deposit back and, if anything is being withheld, a full itemised list with photos, check-in/check-out evidence, and invoices or quotes. Deductions should allow for fair wear and tear, not betterment.

Check your paperwork for the approved scheme holding it (DPS, TDS or mydeposits) and start its repayment/dispute process. The scheme’s ADR service can consider disputed deductions. Keep the tenancy agreement, inventory, deposit records and all messages. If the deposit was not protected, Citizens Advice or Shelter can explain the options. This is general England/Wales guidance, not legal advice — hope you get it sorted.
