What is legal requirement for a deposit?

Hi,

Please can somebody explain the new tenancy law…
As I understand it, I only need to pay 5 weeks rent as a deposit? Does this new law apply to the UK only and/ EU, specifically, Gibraltar? My husband is potentially going there on contract, and the landlords want to charge two months rent as a deposit, purely because I want to bring my cats.

British law applies in Gibralter but they can overide british law if they wish to… Whether they have overidden this one I dont know. Assuming they have not, then the 5 week rule applies

Thank you. I thought British law would apply, so that is why I was querying the 2 months rent as deposit.
