Council tax Croydon council

Hi all,

This is a LL 2 LL question.

I have a new family moved into my flat 13 Dec 24. I emailed Croydon Council to ask them to do the calculation to 12 Dec 24 as my flat was empty and I pay for the liability and close the account addressed to me.

There reply was…To close your account and register the incoming tenants at the above address, please provide the tenancy agreement so that council tax records can be updated accordingly..

I have never done this before, the tenant has always communicate with Croydon Council to update the details on the account, I do not want to disclose or share the tenancy agreement with Croydon Council, they can apply via a court of law.

What do you think LLs? Have you experience this from Croydon Council ?

Thank you

Why don’t you want to disclose the AST?

It is a private agreement between the tenants and myself. I have never had to do this before. It is a matter of principal !!!

what principle is this? Do you want to pay the tenants council tax?

The principal that, I have emailed the Council about the change of people residing in my flat.

Some councils request this. No big deal

So now they want to make sure you are not lying to them and they bill the correct person. Not a problem to most of us

Not an unusual practice for South Gloucestershire Council and Bristol City Council.

The council will want to see the address in question, when the tenancy started, who the tenant is and that this is an agreed AST ie. signed and dated. Just send the pages showing that information. This really is not a big deal.

You are not obliged to give them a copy. They reasonably need to know when the tenant took possession ( not always the ast start date) and left. The ast wont tell them the day the tenant left either.
So tell them the name of the lead tenant and the day they took possession or the start of the ast ( whichever is earlier) and they can start their process
councils like to go fishing, much like inland revenue …the ast can give them all sorts of information for any legal process they might begin for whatever reason

You’re right not to give the council the AST. they have no right to the agreement as you’ve stated. I’ll simply give the details you wish to update and keep an email chain.

I totally agree. I have been a landlord for 19 years and I have never had a council ask for this.

I agree. I have given them the details of the new tenants and moving in date that is enough information for the council to act. My new tenant has already made contact with the council.

I have never been asked for this before.

Just an update.

Croydon Council has now sent me a final bill for the tax I am due to pay till 12th December.
I never sent them the tenancy agreement.
