Decorating/upkeep

Ive been private renting for 4 yrs…had no choice to rent the hoise as i was in debt thro an ex and luckily my landlord took me on.
The house wasnt looking the best…very dated. Walls nicotine yellow lol. Radiators old with rust stains doors chipped and upside down.
I was allowed to paint walls white… but was wondering if i could ask if they were thinking of updating the house at some point… im not working so rent is high and dont want another increase…

I would be careful of asking the LL that. If it’s a major update then you would probably need to move out for them to be able to carry out the works. We would never do any significant updates while a property is occupied. After any update / investment, the rent pretty much always increases which is not what you want.

Personally I don’t re-decorate houses during a tenancy. I’m happy for a tenant to decorate and I will contribute towards paint when necessary. I will replace kitchens & bathrooms as required either during or in-between tenancies.

I regularly fully re-decorate house between tenancies.

Certainly though, the more I spend on a house, the more I must consider rent rises.
