Discovering Mold after moving in

I just moved into a new flat, and there is mould all over the sides of the bathtub and in the ceiling hole which I think is some sort of exhaust. This was meant to be cleaned by the end of tenancy cleaning from the previous tenant but was not. The mould in the exhaust is enormous. I also realised the exhaust makes no noise. I told my agent about this and my health conditions, and she said the exhaust was silent and there is no issue with mould??? Is this a silent exhaust a thing? The bathroom has no window or any ventilation how can I check if this exhaust is actually working when it’s covered in mould. Can I get them to do anything about this? Surely its in the landlord’s best interest to get the mould and exhaust fixed due to lack of ventilation right?

Would appreciate any feedback. Thank You.

It sounds like passive ventilation, if it is a flat in tallish building then they use a riser (big pipe) connected into each wet room by these “exhausts” as you call it to constantly draw air out from wet rooms up the riser and out. To make it work more efficiently you can open a window in another room to increase airflow. The cover of the exhaust can be easily removed and cleaned. If really mouldy it may be that pipe has blockage but that would be weird as it’s just a pipe for air, air can’t block anything. They are silent as they don’t use any mechanical components, just convection.

Send the agent photos of the mold and ask them to deal with it urgently.

If the LL provided an inventory you are usually given 7 days after moving in to raise issues with the inventory. The inventory usually includes a statement to say if no response from the tenant after 7 days the inventory will be considered agreed.
