If you did not agree to the change after both of you gave notice then initial agreement stands and the agent has to accept it. They cannot refuse
If both your notices were the same, (ie giving the same expiry date) and both were valid, then you are correct that the notice cant be withdrawn and the tenancy will end on its expiry. I suggest you remind the joint tenant and if necessary the agent about this.
I’ve spoken to both of them but they keep saying that if he won’t leave then it automatically goes into a periodic tenancy and I will be liable. They also refused to give me a different answer saying that the latest email was a final response and that I’m basically ignorant about legislation. I am waiting on the opinion of a legal about this thanks both of you
Well if it were me, I would suggest he seeks legal advice on that point and then just sever all communication.
