What are the things to look out for when meeting a new landlord to finalize letting. How do I know he’s not trying to scam me ? Please advice

Hello,
I am meeting a taxi man who told me he has a property for rent. We are meeting on Monday to finalize the deal but i am still skeptical about him because my £1700 was stolen through bookings.com last Sunday when I was trying to book an Airbnb called Valdeni apartment. The Valdeni apartments in York street Leeds stole my money and refuse to give me apartment or refund me. I came to UK 3 weeks ago with my wife 2 kids but it has been a bitter experience due to lack of getting accommodation and getting scammed by Valdeni apartment in York street Leeds. I need advice please.

You are viewing a property that a taxi driver recommended to you while chatting ? His own property? This is high risk. There’s things that legally need to be done, like lodging a tenants deposit and presenting paperwork including various safety certificates.

You should visit letting agent shops and register with them.

There is a massive shortage of rental properties in Britain with many applicants per property.

If he’s legitimate he will be doing a right to rent check on you.

Ask him about electrical safety test. (Legally required at least every 5 years.)

Where will your deposit be lodged?

If it has gas is there a current gas safe certificate? (Test needed every year),

Is deposit payment needed in cash? - this can be a red flag.

There needs to be a tenancy agreement contract which you can read before signing.

You need to see the property before even thinking about giving him any money.

It’s very high risk.

Thank you so much for the vital information… he did right to rent check on me yesterday . he checked my visa and all my family visa including our brp … the information your provided here for me is very vital and i shall work on it … thanks

Totally agree with the advice you’re getting here.
Also, it sounds like you could do with some help on getting to know about housing here in the UK. Take a look at the Shelter website, as it gives some great info which could help you and your family.

Please do be careful of being so trusting! Like any country, the UK is lovely, but there are always some who may take advantage.
Can you also get equal amounts of proof of ID from this person before departing with yet more of your money?

Maybe contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau to see what guidance they can provide for you and your family too?:slightly_smiling_face:

Have you reported the theft of your money to the Police?
