Mould in tenants bathroom

I have had new tenants in my property for about 4 months, I went round today to fix something small and asked if there was anything else I should be aware of. The tenant mentioned that there was some mould on the wood bathroom floor. Upon inspection, it was immediately clear that they had been leaving a wet bath mat on the floor (presumably for months) and underneath that mat mould had started to form on the wood and it was quite bad. I have rented the property for almost 10 years and never had this problem so it is clearly this, there was no mould anywhere else. They also mentioned separately that they had not had the heating on and given it is now November this is probably exacerbating the problem. I want to rectify the issue asap however I feel this is clearly the tenants fault and based on some preliminary research it looks like I may need to get the floor stripped back and revarnished which I’m guessing will be costly. Keen to get views on this from other landlords and how best to deal with this. I want to be reasonable and ultimately I want my property to be well maintained, any suggestions for how to handle?

Wooden floors are far from ideal in a bathroom. You should really have been aware of the potential for this problem to happen and given instructions to tenants on arrival about how to handle it, preferably in the tenancy agreement.

Tenants are often new to the business of looking after property and often only learn about such things from experience. I suggest you help them clean up the mould and let them know what to do in future.
