Ive rented a house 18 month ago - and few days ago received notice from landlord to leave in 2 month. There are no issues with landlord and I started to search a new house and luckily I can move in to a new house in 3 weeks.
After informing landlord that I can leave house in a month - now landlord wants me to pay all this 2 month notice period even if I will not live there. Is it legal? what can I do with that? I have standard OpenRent contract with landlord.
According to the terms and conditions of Open Rents standard AST tenancy agreement, the landlord has to give you a minimum of 2 months notice to end the agreement. As a tenant you only have to give 1 months notice.
The notice period is a calendar month inline with the monthly rental periods.
E.g. If your rent is due on 25th of the month you must give notice on or before the 25th for the notice to expire on the 24th of the following month.
So, what Chris said above as long as it says in your contract or if you’ve rolled over to statutory periodic.
I would quite frankly go back to the LL and tell him you’ll be surrendering the lease if he pays your moving costs. If not, you’ll stay put and see what the court says.
That will change the tune if him.
I am a LL and would never treat a tenant like this.
