Redundancy and moving areas

Hello Landlords

I need your advice. I’m in a catch 22 situation where I want to move down south. Employers are reluctant to offer me a contract without accommodation being secured, and landlords won’t offer accommodation unless you have the job secured. I’ve looked at Airbnb and temporary accommodation and they are very expensive, so I don’t particularly want to go down that route.

So I recently took voluntary redundancy at work so I could get a lump sum of money behind me in the hope that I could offer six months rent upfront or something similar. I would then take any temporary work until I could find myself something more long-term. I’m an ex teacher/professional so work has never been an issue for me. I’m very lucky. I’ve been renting for 20 years without any failed rent payments.

But as a landlord, would that put you off?

I would suggest that you get evidence of the employment contract theyre offering you as that will be quite important to landlords.

I didn’t think of that! That’s really useful thank you!

Also a lot of local authorities give orecedence to people moving to the area for work I know it probably not ideal but as a start till you gan secure a property it may be worth considering

Thanks for the tip, It’s so hard to make a move from one city to another ! Never thought it would be this complex .

It sounds like these employers are not offering enough money to reasonably expect the employee to pay market rents, and can only employ those already living in the area who have a locked in contract at a lower rate. Their only valid concern should be how long it will take you to find a place.

You might look at lodging until you get your feet under you; lodger landlords are taking less risk as the notice period is only 1 payment period, and you can also move out quickly once you find somewhere you like. Although please be upfront that that’s what you’re doing.
