Hello,
I’m looking at properties to rent. I have a good rental history with my landlord of 15yrs (now selling the property). I do not have any ccj’s or bankruptcy but I have a couple of defaults and a low credit score - I’m fully aware of my mistake and am now back on track.
I have never missed any rental payments or utility payments.
Will I fail the credit check because of this? I will be honest and upfront with any potential landlord but I’m just wondering if it will be an automatic fail on the credit check side or things? I also the verified tenant which came back clear but presume the full check will go more indepth?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Hi @James202
With OpenRent, the landlord decides whether to accept or reject your application. Although most landlords use our referencing service, others have their own process, and in any case may accept an application regardless of the outcome of referencing.
Our referencing process is set up to handle a wide range of circumstances including not being resident in the UK, self employed applicants and housing benefit claimants. As such we can reference tenants regardless of their circumstances, but for obvious reasons we can’t say whether you will pass or fail until the full checks are carried out.
It’s also worth noting that if the landlord isn’t happy with the report, you may still be able to take the property if you can provide a UK-based guarantor, however as I mentioned the final decision is ultimately up to them.
The best thing to do is to contact the landlords of the properties you’re interested in, and mention upfront any concerns you have about the application process.
You can find full details on our referencing here.

I will always be upfront with a potential landlord but I do not have a guarantor and if they choose to go through Openrent for referencing I don’t want them thinking they have wasted the referencing fee for me to automatically fail…thats why I was wondering if the credit score has a major impact on outcome even if I don’t have any ccj’s etc

Worth considering the use of companies who provide a guarantor service (for a fee, obviously).
There’s no single referencing report used by all LLs and some LLs will cautiously reject anyone with an issue others may investigate further.
