Referencing Universal Credit Applicants

Hello,

I’m struggling to find an answer so here it goes.

I am just about to reference check a couple who are both on UC with housing top up in place. Gut feeling is good with them as they seem like a lovely couple with young child, that would look after my property well. They sadly lost a child last year and have both been off work for a little while as a result but are now looking to get back on their feet again. For now though, they are unemployed and looking for a new home.

Will they pass the OpenRent referencing do we think? Or do people solely on UC not pass this kind of check? I don’t want to spend another £60 on a couple for them to fail and not be able to get RGI.

Before you do any referencing, have you seen 6 months’ of bank statements? That will give you a far better insight into not just their affordability but lots else and will either confirm or contradict your current gut feeling. Plus, it’s free to do.
