I recently got a job in Scotland. I am in need of accommodation for rental. Is it possible for me to secure the accommodation and pay for it before I leave South Africa where I am based.

It is up to the individual landlord. Some LLs like to reference potential tenants. In the hunt for rental properties, you will be at a disadvantage because you won’t have a UK credit profile which is used to assess your suitability. In the UK at present the private rental sector is strong with many potential tenants chasing every property listing and these landlords will likely go with a tenant that has a UK credit profile. Some may consider you if you are instead able to provide a UK guarantor or pay 6 months rent in advance.

A word of warning depending where your job is . Edinburgh has just declared a housing emergency situation with Glasgow likely to follow. It means there basically is nor enough accommodation to rent either socially or privately.
