Moved in to a shared accomodation 7 months ago (all bills included). And I’m now getting a letter requesting Council Tax payment. Landlord won’t get back to me… Any tips?
Pay it and argue later. CT is collected by councils for the government. If you don’t pay it within a certain time you’ll get a Liability Order which adds about £90 to the bill. Then you’ll be asked to pay the whole lot in one go as the ability to pay in installments is lost.
Or are you past the Liability Order stage?
Edit: It would be stupid for a LL to offer to pay CT as CT can vary according to a) the number of people in the property (which may be different from the lease) and b) the T’s income which can vary month to month as there are discounts for lower paid. It would be a nightmare for the LL as they would need to chase up the T for personal information (and evidence) to present to the Council.
What are the other tenants doing?
Find a copy of the advert, any correspondence regarding bills and your tenancy agreement to see what the contractual position might be about CT. The statutory position is that if this is a joint tenancy of at least 6 months, then all tenants are jointly liable for the CT. If you have an individual room only tenancy, then the landlord is legally liable for the CT.
