Tenant sent to prison

Hi there, I rent out a property to a couple with both their names in the AST. One of the tenants has been sent to prison and his partner has given notice as she won’t be able to keep up with the rent.

I’m more than happy to go ahead with that but I’m unsure whether the tenant in prison has any say in this. My concern is whether his partner can break the lease without his formal input.

Any advice is much appreciated.

My understanding is that either tenant can give notice to end the tenancy and that such notice is binding on all tenants.

Either tenant can give notice to end the tenancy, but only once the tenancy is periodic unless the tenancy agreement says otherwise.
