Did you not do work referencing prior to granting the tenancy? That would have exposed him telling lies about his occupation.
Moving people in who are not named on the agreement is another clear breach that would have allowed you to evict.
Too many landlords tolerate bad practices in my opinion and clearly in this instance the tenant was testing the landlord little by little leading to overcrowding and damage.
The answer is perhaps to take a much firmer stance on the terms of your tenancy

Many simply do not respect regardless of what has been discussed or agreed.

That’s exactly right Mark and that’s why Landlords take the precautionary action of having their applicant credit and employer checked and voiding any holding ccj as being high risk.
Not to put too finer point on it but I’ve little sympathy for any landlord disregarding the credit and employer checks and happily letting high risk dishonest applicants into their properties. It’s simply asking for trouble
