Hi. My partner and i live in a bedsit. We work and do not claim benefits. There are other tenants living in the building. We all received a letter last week from a company telling us that the tenancy will be up in a months time. As we werent aware of this we are struggling to get something in our price range. If we do not pay the rent as we will need this to help us find something - is this illegal. Surely the landlords will understand we cant afford to rent and pay them also.
A landlord needs to give 2 months notice so if you have only been given 1 months the notice isn’t valid. A tenancy doesn’t automatically end at the end of a fixed term so he still needs to give required notice.
You should make all reasonable efforts to pay your rent, you will presumably need a reference to get future rentals and if that states you are behind on rent you are unlikely to find anything. Landlord can also get ccj issued against you. Dependent on circumstances you can speak to current landlord to see if he is willing to waive any rent in exchange for you leaving promptly.
Thankyou. I dont know if we will our deposit back. Weve been here a few years. We need our rent money to get another place. I cant understand why working people have a worse time than unemployed. Theres no help for us.
What is the issue, why do you feel you shouldn’t pay rent? The new rent would replace the old, your deposit back will cover the new deposit? A loan for the new deposit is an option if you have not saved any money and they require it before you get your old deposit back.
You should definitely make sure your rent is paid, the consequences of not could seriously damage your chances of renting in the future.
