I wonder if this thing can be replaced or restored or painted or whatever? Anything that could make it look more decent would do. Does anyone have any idea of what to do with it?
Plughole. Can be swapped, plumber callout fee around £50. I swapped myself, not difficult.
Or a very rough and ready option is a stainless steel cover from Amazon for about £3. (They just rest on top of it, or use silicone to stick)

Replace. If you are not able to do it yourself you do not need a plumber for this. A handyman can do. Only difficulty you might have is - if you change trap then sometimes its shape / length does not align old pipes position . But there are adjustable ones which can go up and down etc.
