Discriminating landlords

Shelter and Councils are given bad advice and leaving people homeless by the way. We currently have a war on between landlords and tenants. The Government has demonised landlords for far too long. All the stupid new regulations and interest rates landlords are going bankrupt - horray you say? No it just means there will be less homes available. I for one am looking to sell up my beautifully done up, well maintained, fully compliant properties because i’ve had enough of Government interference, dishonest Agents, Tenants who cause damage, theft and leave my places dirty then become abusive. I too am looking to evict a DSS tenant - why he’s in arrears and no I don’t always get paid by the council even tho it’s direct payment, he denies access even when we want to improve the property for him, he’s threatened to stab anyone trying to evict. So we now have to evict as he will likely continue to refuse viewings - he’s created this for himself but he can’t see it. a threatening attitude will not do a tenant any favours.

You would be considered The landlord has a list with other peoples income, someone else is higher manybe a few of them . They will be considered first I offered to rent to a retired girl last week .3 males had a higher income . she had a pension and H B support . I offered to her first , just because I liked her. Few days later “I do not want it now” Your attitude will count A LOT to a landlord

I have rejected tenants because they didn’t respond correctly to my questionnaire. I have rejected working tenants who did not earn enough to pay the rent. I have rejected tenants just because I think they are disrespectful and rude. I don’t have any ‘duty’ to consider anyone. I may even decide not to rent to anyone.

All the energy you are using at the moment, I would reserve it to concentrate on finding a suitable home for you and your parents. Also take into account your long term health issue you have mentioned.

I have just made enquiries for 6 properties today explaining my circumstances, what will be will be, I am a great believer in that. Just don’t give up, and use this energy you seem to have to contact all this individuals/organisations to keep on looking and approaching landlord’s. Something will come up

Why is it discrimination on the basis you can’t afford something?
If that was the case Asda would have lawsuits left right and centre !

You personally might not discriminate but we are getting it time and time again still not getting any views when we have in excess of 50,000 coming in plus savings in excess of 200k. We also have a guarantor and have offer to pay several months in advance in fact even a year in advanced. We also have great references from our current landlord who just wants to sell up and that’s the reason we’re leaving and our present a state agent who both say we are great tenants and keep a place very tidy and in fact have the even done with approval of the landlord some painting and decorating to a very high standard. You might not believe me when I’m telling you this but this is the truth and this is why the new law which is coming out very soon needs to be taken Serious by a state agents and landlords to stop them discriminating against people who are not working. I know some people will try and get properties when they can’t afford them but that’s not the case here we have the money and what’s been happening to us is a disgrace but we carry on and we will eventually find somewhere but I might be forced to take one or two people to task over their discrimination because I’ve had enough of it it’s not just once or twice we are talking 10 and 15 times it now and now it’s becoming a joke when we’ve got the money to rent somewhere and I’m talking over 1700 pounds which is for going rate where we are.

@Keith24 Is it possible to point out which law this is? All governments have a wish list of laws, but you seem confident this one has passed all the stages and has Royal Assent. It would be useful to know so people can be aware of the need to comply.

I know, from experience, that many landlords are not aware of legislation and will often continue with a custom and practice as they don’t take the trouble to make themselves aware. So can you help out here?

not holding my breath on this one

I’d love to be your LL, Gary. Which area do are you based in, roughly?

When the new legislation that you covet, will be passed, more LL will be selling up, and your problems in finding a place will only increase. Take your 200K and 50K coming and buy yourself a place in the area you can afford it. If you’re unemployed yo don’t have to travel to work, so can be more relaxed about where you live. GP surgeries, hospitals and other infrastructure that you need, cover the whole country.

But to me, it just feels like you’re venting here and don’t need any advice. You don’t listen to any, anyway. Don’t know if all this stress is making you unwell, but I suspect that’s what contributes to you being so confrontational. Just leave the bickering, it’s a road to nowhere. And, believe me, CC, CAB and Shelter won’t help you in your personal circumstances. You need to help yourself.

Nope, sorry. Hope that you will find a good place for yourself. You will be a real asset to any LL with your common sense, decency and good heart. Good luck.

Yeah its not too bad bit like most places has good and bad areas I am just outside St Helens in.a town called Newton-le-Willows (home to Rick Astley lol)

Blimey. My husband’s parents are from Newton-le-Willows, and their eldest son was born there. And Rick Astley is the third half-cousin.They even look alike. Tim often plays his Never-never-give-you up. That’s what ancestry dot com does to you.))

Unfortunately properties around this area are a lot more than 200,000 try close to three quarters of a million. When you get to my mum and her partner’s age you’re saying your ways and they like a routine where they’re going to their British Legion bingo etc. If I had my way I would be moving right out of London up to Great Yarmouth area but they don’t want it they say they like it around here lived around here all their lives and unfortunately they won’t change plus my mum’s boyfriend has a kind of mental problem it’s not a bad one it’s just that he doesn’t like change so he doesn’t want to be moving right away out it’s bad enough getting him to move five miles away or even three miles away if he had his way he would find another property in the same block or one of a blocks across for roads because that’s the way the man is he can’t help away he is and unfortunately I have to look very local. I am probably going to end up having to contact age Concern and Citizens Advice Bureau because this can’t carry on I have tried and tried and tried and I’m just getting no response with so many different excuses the latest one being which you can see from another post of mine estate agents are telling me the landlord doesn’t want to rent to 3 adults due to the size of the room which I’ve had quite a few times and these are even double bedrooms and I’m beginning to get very annoyed it so I’m gonna have to get be authorities involved and try and see if they can help us
