My tenant has asked if I would consider installing an electric car charging point for him.
I am considering it but I think there may be a problem in siting it in/near garage as the garage is in a block a few yards from the house.
So the cabling would have to travel across the pavement and the next door neighbours house in order to connect.
Does anyone know if that would involve licences or similar because my instincts say that could be difficult.
Thanks for any input.
Are the garages the right place for the charge point? Do people use them for their vehicles? Most dont any more.
Yes the garages are used for cars. My garage is the middle one of three. The nearest garage has a charge point and its that garage over which rhe cabling would have to travel to reach my garage.
Theres also some small pavement area which the cable would have to travel over in order to get to the house.
Thanks David
This is a minefield. Firstly, the pavement would require an application to the council and grants of permission to cross footpaths are expensive (think thousands). It’s a bit of legislation which the govt says it wants to change but is doing little about and it’s preventing pretty much everyone in a terraced property charging their EVs from home.
Then there’s access across the neighbour’s land which they could simply refuse. Even if they agree, the installation company would have to go to some lengths to route this to your house.
For a rental, I wouldn’t bother. If it was my home, I miiiiiight consider it worth the hassle.
Interestingly if we all went EV and all these cables were introduced the roads would light up ( literally)
I’m not sure why they are plugging ahead with this. We don’t have the infrastructure and like normal it hasn’t been thought through and they don’t seem to listen to their advisers
Case in point Covid
I guess they’ll just lose their phones if their is an enquiry
I know a little about this sort of situation as I lived in an old mill house where the water and electric came under and across 2 fields not owned by me . I had all sorts of paperwork relating to access and easements. ( before my time). In your case forget it.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and help.
I think my instincts are that it is too much effort for one house.
I do wonder how the neighbour installed his charge point though as he had to cross the same piece of pavement. Not my worry!
Thanks again.
