I am looking for a properly for me an my partner We don’t work due to disability no adaptive housing needs. I’m partially sighted. we earn a combined income of 2,793 + housing benefits 398.
I am really struggling with finding a place, I rent the house I’m currently in an pay 650 per month a I’ve no issues paying my rent. I’ve had private rent for the last 5 years and have always been up to date with payments. We are very respectable people. I used to work as a supervisor for 6 years at Primark and I’m trained in life suport. I’m a good person. But nobody seems to give us a chance. I’m only out of work due to my sight failing. Why is it so hard for landlords to give people a chance. Its unfair to discriminate just l because someone doesn’t work. I’ve worked for most of my life.
I’m going to be homless an Christmas this is so devastating for me. I just need a chance.
It’s the system not your disability.
Quite a few reasons may be why…
Your HB doesn’t cover rent.
Rent is by default paid direct to tenant not landlord. Hard to change to being paid direct and can be cancelled at any time by tenant.
Big delay in rent being paid.
More wear and tear on property.
There are typically over 50 people applying for each property now as big shortage so the easier option will be taken. (Many landlords have sold up as government have made it very difficult for them)
Yes i understand the hb doesn’t cover the rent bur i pay a top of 250 to cover the extra rent costs. Plus i have 5 years private rental history of never being late with my rent or even missing a payment.
Some will definitely consider as they see it as good stable tenant. (As I have)
If I were you I would go round all local letting agents in person and try to build up rapport so they see you as a person. They can influence landlords they have on their books.
You may have to lower any expectations in terms of property quality.
