I recently rented a one-bedroom apartment in Liverpool, but realise that the house containing 6 apartments has no number on it. The flat has no numbers on the intercom buttons as well.
When I asked the landlord about it and how I am going to get my registered mails and parcel force deliveries. He played it down until I told him I am suspending payment of further rent until he fixes it. He said he had sent an electrician to fix it since last week I have not seen anybody.
Meanwhile, I have lost 2 mails because delivery men could not communicate through the intercom system to me. So I always had to go to the delivery office which is far away off, to collect my deliveries, and I am not a young person.
he must fix the intercom In a multi occu place. They are a bit difficult when they go faulty, but that is not your problem. Tell him again. As a temporary fix you could buy one of the bells that needs no wires put on the door frame with your name and apartment number and in your room plugs into the ring main. As long as not all of you do that as sometimes the signals can get mixed up.
Thanks for your warning however, I feel I am in a prison already, so eviction is not a concern for me at the moment.
I am not used to living in a place with a question mark like this. The house is the only house without a number on it on the street. And none of the apartments has a number on their button. Is this kind of secret hideout? I don’t know.
I just moved house all the way from London and I didn’t know much of the house, as he wasn’t transparent.
Besides, I am not owning him, he has my deposit and I have already paid him for the month which has just expired, which is filled with lots of difficulties and surprises which I did not bargain for.
If you wouldn’t mind, Is providing me with a standard government-approved facility that makes my tenancy tolerable, not infringing on my freedom of movement and human rights, not a part of his tenancy service to me?
I’m not saying it’s not an inconvenience and needs to be rectified. However, by just leaving you’ll be breaking your lease and be liable for rent for the remainder of your contract.
You cannot stop paying rent just because you have paid a deposit. That is not what it is for.
You should obviously write to the landlord and tell him to fix it immediately.
The bell has a small battery in it It will have a sticky back or be screwed on. The main body simply plugs into a wall socket…I don t know where you are living, but you can buy them in the likes Of B and M , or Home and Bargain, Wilko, Argos… Electrical suppliers
Do you think that he is not already breaking the contract for selling me a substandard tenancy that falls short of the required standard in the United Kingdom?
Hasn’t he the obligation to inform me of failures in such a crucial communication and security facility as required in a block of flats?
Is it mandatory for delivery drivers to ring me, I never heard that before and they never rang me?
And is it not mandatory for Landlords offering tenancy to mark the street number of their houses and provide secure and convenient access for their visitors and delivery men?
Did you not view and see that there was no number on the building? I don’t think there is any legal requirement for a property to display a number??
It is an inconvenience if the intercom is not working, but not justification for withholding your rent. It is very short sighted over such a trivial matter because as and when you leave and want to rent somewhere else, you might need a reference from your landlord and it isn’t likely to be complimentary (apart from the fact that he will want rid of you so might give a decent reference so that you leave!).
You said at first that the intercom had no numbers on, not that it wasn’t working - in that case, find out which one is yours and put your number on it! If it is not working, as others have said, just get yourself a doorbell. how did you find the place with no number on the door? So the delivery guy will do the same… Its a question of then letting you know he is there . If landlord is too tight to provide a bell then I would buy one for peace of mind
If you walk down the street a bit until you find some houses with numbers then count up or down until you get to yours. Usually odd or even numbers depending on the side of the street.
2, 4, 6, 8 etc
