Me and my partner paid our final rent payment on 25th July 2026, which took our tenancy agreement up until 8th August 2026 - we handed our keys to the estate agent on the 7th August 2026.
Our landlord paid our deposit in full back to us on the 13th August 2026 with no report, no communication to say it was sent, nothing.
A couple of weeks go by, nothing from the landlord still, but I forgot to cancel my standing order so our final rent payment was duplicated.
I contacted the landlord this morning asking for the duplicate payment to be returned, as we no longer are tenants at his property. The landlord replied suggesting he ‘intended’ on contacting me as we owe £150 for cleaning.
I requested to see an invoice / bill for cleaning, he only sent pictures which in my opinion isn’t worth £150 worth of cleaning as we left it in pretty good nick.
I have requested multiple times already this morning to have the payment returned to me, or I would be happy to pay the cleaning fee if I can see a bill for the cleaning.
He has refused on multiple occasions, he suggested that we left the place in a ‘pigsty’ which caused new tenants to not be able to move in (I spoke with the estate agents who confirmed that they moved in on the 14th August). The landlord has continued lying suggesting he doesn’t have a bill because the cleaning was only done at the weekend.
I spoke to my bank to try to get the money back but as it’s a standing order they cannot help.
Just really need some advice on this? The landlord has said he would returned the monies minus the £150 for cleaning but I would like to see what cleaning costs were actually incurred as we left it in a good state.
