No hot water! And then a leak when it’s fixed

Hello Everyone,

I would like some advice on where can I complain about the landlord. I stay near island gardens station. So I am staying in a ensuite. My shower had some issues since I moved in property in March. I notified the landlord about the issue but they ignored it saying its not a big deal. On 20th July there was no hot water in the shower. I reached out to the landlord every day and had go to a friend’s place to maintain basic hygiene. The landlord was unresponsive on whatsapp and their call was not even ringing. After three days they said they will look into it and fix it, they took THREE WEEKS to fix this issue and then it was resolved day before yesterday. I had to chase them for the fix and the reason they gave me was that it’s hard to find a person to fix things in this country.

Now the person took 8 hours to fix the shower. And check for any leaks, there were none. Yesterday after work I went home and I had water in my wardrobe. It has ruined my clothes and my stuff which was stored in the wardrobe. Again the landlord’s phone is not reachable, the whatsapp messages are not being delivered and the whole floor and wardrobe is wet. I had to go a friend’s place to sleep as all my stuff was on my bed. I transferred the rent just a day before the shower was fixed and I am serving my notice. The property is inhabitable as everything is wet and I want to lodge a complaint and claim a compensation from the landlord. This has been the worst landlord I have been with. When I asked them for a compensation they said “why should I pay for the compensation, rather I should charge you for the problem. I can put the blame on you” This place has been a nightmare, I have struggled mentally because of this landlord.

Can anyone please help me out with this situation. I have all the photos and call records of the landlord not responding. Is there any board or government agency which can help me?

Try the Council. Ask for an inspection by Environmental Health.

Hello David,

Yes I made a complaint to the council and the leak was fixed. The shower is still broken and I can’t use it.

I want to ask for compensation for the inconvenience this situation has caused.

er… you just said the shower had been fixed. What exactly is wrong with it if it is still broken?

Did you complain to environmental health and ask for an inspection? Did they inspect the property? Until you do this and you have something official to verify your claims, you’ll have very little leverage with your LL.

Hello,

So after 18 days of me letting the landlord know about no hot water, they sent a plumber to fix the shower. The plumber took 8 hours to fix it. Then a day after its fixed it was leaking and flooded my wardrobe. I tried calling the landlord, the call didn’t connect. The messages on WhatsApp had a single tick. Then the next day I complained to the council. I got a email from council about the complaint. Within 3 hours of the complaint to the council the landlord sent another plumber to fix the leak. The shower was still not functional, as the plumber arrived at 9 pm on Friday. Now today is Sunday and the shower is fixed around 12 pm.

When I asked the landlord for a compensation because of almost 20 days without a shower, they said it was all fuss I created and if I want to get compensation, I will have to go to court and also said they will tell court that I have been harassing them and wanted to extract money from them.
