Smoke Alarms regulation

I had a smoke alarm break in a 3 bed maisonette flat all the rooms are off the landing at the top of the stairs.

The alarm that broke was in the kitchen and there was one working in the landing area, I told the guy to just replace it but the tenants told him to put it outside the kitchen door on the landing as they didn’t want it going off all the time, it is a lounge diner set up so the kitchen and lounge are more or less one room. so basically i now have 2 smoke alarms around 1 meter away from each other on the landing which seems a bit daft - its just a mix up really.

The tenants are moving out in around 3 months so I was just going to buy a smoke alarm that is the new type for a kitchen designed not to go off all the time and put it in when they leave in 3 months.

My question is can I wait 3 months until they leave or am I breaking some regulations that could lead to a fine, even though there are 2 working smoke alarms. as they are both in the same area?

Thanks

Kitchen should have a heat alarm NOT a smoke alarm

Hi thanks but is this a legal requirement?

Yes. and surely you want tenants to be safe

well I think having put in 2 smoke alarms shows that i want to keep the tenants safe no need for that type of reply, I explained the situation in the post.

Its OK I found the correct answer on a better more knowledgeable forum: In a standard 1 family rental you need a smoke alarm on each floor and they do not need to be hardwired. A heat alarm in the kitchen is good practice and inter linked is a good choice too but not required.

It may be required in certain rooms, certain locations and wired into the electricity mains, eg in the London Borough of Islington, where there is mandatory licensing of 3+ bedrooms, because of historic, tragic fires and the need for learning, eg Lakanal, in Camberwell, where 6 people were killed.

Neelix. That is unfair.

This is a forum for people to ask for advice. If everybody knew everything there would be no need for such a forum.
