Tenancy Reference

Who pays for tenancy reference? The tenant or landlord?

The landlord pays to reference the prospective tenant.

My landlord is requesting that I remit the money for reference checks for me and my partner into their account. I know it is the landlord’s responsibility to pay for it. They also sent a screenshot of Openrent receipt page to me. How can go about this? How best should I approach them in this instance? I will appreciate detailed clarification. Thanks for helping out.

detailed clarification is that you do NOT pay for it

The Landlord is in breach of the Tenant Fees Act. You need to tell them No. They may simply be unaware.

But if they are aware….

If you miss out on the property as a result, so be it. What other corners are they cutting to make profit illegally. Do you really want to rent from such a person.

You can also report them to trading standards.

  1. This person is not your landlord
  2. I would make very sure that they do not become so.

I would worry about being in a contract with a landlord who is either supremely unaware or very unscrupulous.
