Utilities advice

Ok, just looking for some landlord advice. I’m still pretty new to this.
My last tenant’s left my house two days ago, end of July. I’ve not decided if I want to let it back out again straight away. I done the check out report yesterday and made a note of the electric readings but not gas as the LCD panel seems to be broken. I do have the start reading though when they moved in a year ago.

Obviously I am responsible for paying the bills in the house while it is not let. However example if I go to Octopus energy and sign up today do I put the start date as 1st August ? I assume so but there system won’t be let me enter yesterdays date… Sorry if I thought thick but I guess I have to phone them to let them know?

Need to get the meter fixed asap.

Your responsibility begins the day after the tenancy ends. Best to call.

I’m with octopus and weirdly they have never billed me for the in between tenant periods, even though I always let them know.

The priority is to get that meter fixed and also acertain how it got broke (if you have the start reading it mustve been broken by the tenant)

Octopus are really easy. email them at hello AT Octopus.energy (email address typed in non standard format to stop it going to moderators)* telling them last tenant moved out on 31st July & now you are responsible.

You can also mention to them your concern about the meter not working. If the display is just blank, liklehood is the battery has gone flat & the meter will need replacing.
