Why disallow dogs and other pets

Surely your own comment here answers your question. You can bet the previous tenant promised that their pets were the dogs bollox too. Yet subsequently left the carpets and house stinking. Why expect a landlord to take the extra risk. Potential extra cost for nothing. There are too many pet free tenants out there to choose from I’m afraid

Pet owners say they don’t damage… but dogs I know lick up all manner of food accidently dropped on the carpet. I wouldn’t want my tenants licking the carpet… so why want a dog to do it

Sit at the table to eat so there is no reason for them to lick!!!
I found this on the government website

ask all the questions… If you do not want pets, or kids, or smokers or morris dancers , Just say Sorry i cannot help you … It s your property ,You do not have to give a reason.

I would be asking for the proof its an assistance dog and registered with who?

I don’t believe anybody is calling you a liar, but I detect a very self centered attitude in your posts. You would most certainly have a different attitude if it was your property someone wanted to bring a dog into. I know you will contest this statement, but if you’ve never been a landlord, you simply cannot appreciate the risks.
It’s quite simple put your money where your conscience is, and produce a suitable pet insurance or advance cleaning / reparations fund to rectify any potential future problems. No doubt your answer will be, I can’t afford it, but you expect the landlords to afford the risk on your behalf. Is that fair??
As with anything else in life, people need to take responsibility for their own actions, although that is not what the government and bleeding heart liberals believe.
The choice to have a pet was your choice, why then do you feel it is acceptable to force that responsibility on someone else, i.e. the landlord?
In my personal, real life, experience a high percentage of tenants do not care about the landlords ultimate liability, and will walk away from their responsibilities, because the pathetic court system allows them to, without a second thought. That is why landlords are so cautious of who they allow to rent their properties.

Yes, and quite often they do exactly that, including introducing pets in breach of their contracts, and the hell with the landlords subsequent liability for damage and costs, they simply walk away into the sunset…
Happy days for the tenant, what?

We recently had an HB applicant, who spent 3 pages threatening legal action against me and the agents, if we didn’t accept him. He refused to provide a guarantor, saying it wasn’t necessary and declared himself a schizophrenic. Really…!!
I once had a drug induced schizophrenic tenant, who we had to remove in handcuffs.
I only hope the agent didn’t take a holding deposit, they’ve still not confirmed that to me yet.

It’s not entitled view I get why ppl don’t want pets but they shouldn’t judge all pet owners not all pet owners let there animals run feral just like they don’t let there kids and as for smoking in someone’s property I’m a smokers yet in the four yrs I’ve lived here I’ve not smoked in this house due my grandson not been allowed it I also put my dog in his cage while there visiting because even though they have a dog he doesn’t like other ppls dogs but because my dog is well trained he knows where to go when they arrive he only weed twice when we first got him in the house because he was 8wks old but we left the patio doors open and he soon worked out that he did his business outside do you honestly think if my dog was destructive or messed in the house I’d be asking this question no I wouldn’t I’m asking because my dog is fully house trained he’s never done any damage and I can’t get a house because of him and some landlords think I should get rid of him as above but he’s my fur baby he’s there to cuddle when I’m having my bad days he’s an amazing dog not a bad dog but landlords done care because all dog owners are the same

Why would I have to do that he’s not destructive or messes in the house and I’m not lying when I say this I’ve no need to lie I wouldn’t ask why if he was anyway there’s no point speaking about it anymore because your all making out all dog owners are the same so I’m ending it there I hope your never in my situation thank you all for your responses I just hope they bring in the law that you don’t have a choose goodbye

I’m an asthmatic and I wouldn’t be sharing my house with anyone and I keep the house clean as he has black fur he goes to a dog groomer every few months and I bath him in between im not saying every persons animal is well behaved but mine is and I feel discriminated against because where all ment to be bad owners

and it goes on and on and on and on just like the last time

Haha this will soon be another 200+ post as you’d mentioned. The irony of the OP to say they didn’t have time to read/respond to the other post and yet here they are. There is plenty of valid info / advice on here (again!) but I think some people don’t want to or can’t be helped.

Hmmm…
So you don’t want to take responsibility for your dog, but fully expect a landlord to roll over and have his tummy tickled, whilst you simply vocalise your contientiousness, but aren’t prepared to back it up with some security. Whilst you expect a landlord who doesn’t know you from Adam to take you at your word, and risk his major financial investment on it.
If that was how we operated, there would be no contracts, laws or legislation and, believe me, you certainly wouldn’t like that.
Unfortunately for you, you need to wake up to reality.
I’ve had a chap turn up with his parents, “oh Jonny is such a good boy”, 12 months later he’s locked up in Wakefield prison for dealing drugs out of my property, leaving me with a mess and over 2000 pounds of unpaid rent, and after having assaulted me for telling him to mend his ways.
Yet tenants are so badly done by…!

I agree with you in that there isn’t any point in carrying on this conversation. You’ve asked a question on your original post and many have replied, although you’ve neither liked nor accepted any of the responses. I don’t mean to be impolite but from a practical point of view, I don’t think spending any more time on here complaining about landlords is going to help your specific situation. Best of luck finding a suitable place.

Landlord - just take the higher ground and stop commenting and let the thread die. No one is going to change their mind about whether they allow pets/think landlords should allow pets, so it just turns into a bad tempered argument!

As @Colin3 said, it will go on and on and on and on and…

The question that we should really be asking is, why is there no fix for a broken mentality.

So you are entitled then. You can’t smoke because your grandson won’t allow it so you don’t question and haven’t smoked, yet when it’s the person providing you with a home you feel you can question why you can’t have a pet. So basically when it suits you and your family it’s ok but when you are told no it’s discrimination

Benefits system is great isn’t it, being able to afford to smoke.

Kate 8 .What a great reply I wish I had thought of it.

Sharon, please answer this question honestly…

If you were a landlord and you had to choose between 2 tenants, both of whom can afford it and both have great credit history. One has a dog and the other doesn’t, which one would YOU choose?

(Knowing that if the dog ruins your property you have to pay for it out of your OWN money and make arrangements to get all the repairs done yourself).
