Why disallow dogs and other pets

Is that helpful? No, this lady is obviously in distress about her situation there seems to be a prejudice toward pet owners in general, I have experienced this myself, so I totally get it, do you have pets? She is only seeking a little help or advice

Landlords prejudiced against pet owners I agree, like there is general prejudice against smokers.

You must have a dog in a million they are very rare just like good tenants really, even some councils will not accept pets as nobody knows your dog from the next & sometimes the council says no pets to private landlords because it’s in the lease, maybe if they bought dog licences back with a record of the dogs behaviour it might help? But then there would be a cost for that licence & would the people who give the dog a bad name be prepared to pay?! Probably not, it’s all about liability & what goes into a property is a tenants responsibility- I wish you good luck but you’ll probably have to compromise on the standard of property available that allow pets, it’s not your dogs fault it’s the reputation pets have earned in rented. :+1:

I am a landlord, and a dog owner, and I would not want tenants with a dog, or a cat. Many reasons already explained above, but have you also considered that many people are allergic to cats in particular and also dogs, the rate of childhood asthma now is ridiculous. When you move out there would need to be a complete defumigation of the property so that the next tenants don’t sue me when little Johnny goes into an asthma attack. As a dog owner I know dogs leak a lot of mystery fluids and my own furniture is in a terrible state, I don’t have this preference out of ignorance, it is out of knowledge.

As a pensioner looking for a forever rental home who is a dog owner your comments are offensive. I’ve had dogs all my 43 years of married life, 20 of them in army quarters and never has any of my dogs damaged, spoilt or destroyed any of the 16 properties. Please don’t judge everyone the same. Maybe landlords could ask for current photos of prospective tenants home. I have a chihuahua now, hardly 3 kgs weight and he produces no mess! My house is very clean!

2-3 out of 10 people have an allergy to cats and/or dogs. General cleanliness is not the same thing at all. Things that are not even visible to the naked eye can trigger people’s allergies. Its the same reason that a lot of schools do not allow any nuts to be brought in because there are peanut allergy kids. Try putting an ultra violet lamp on the furniture and bedding your dog sits on and then let me know what you find. From a landlord’s perspective, why take any additional risk when someone else without pets will take the property?

When landlord had very nasty experience with
tenants with pets dogs/cats and then why
would that landlord want to rent again to through
financial and mental stress.

Tenants should try to understand from the landlord’s point of view too.

It does make me laugh how many dog owners harp on about how lovely and clean they always are and have never ever left a smell or a mess or fur everywhere and never bark and never a nuisance. I’ve had dogs for years, none of this is ever true. Disillusionment!

Helena, I bet you didn’t work right and were able to monitor your dogs throughout the day?

No my dogs had crates that they loved and I did work……as a cleaner!!!
There’s unseen bugs, germs, dust mites and bacteria everywhere, most peoples immune system is built to cope with them!!!
Childrens asthma will diminish when electric cars take over from fuel run ones which causes more problems than pets!!!
I guess we will have to agree to disagree because this could go on forever!!

That explains why your house was always kept nice! The issue is everyone labels the entire group a certain way, most people houses I have visited show signs of extended wear and smells when they have dogs, this is a fact. Some tenants need to get the rid of their entitlement attitude.

Tenants rarely treat a rented home with proper respect with or without pets.

I’ve been to smokers homes that don’t stink, but nobody, landlords or otherwise, want someone smoking in their home.

As for asthma diminishing….maybe in about 50 years!!!
Allergies will still be present regardless (!!)

Anyway I’m done with this thread!!

The majority of landlords can’t be wrong in what our experiences are if you’re finding it difficult to find a rental that openly welcomes pets.

I feel so sorry for you Sharon, I am a landlord who does allow pets and have not has any problems, but I can see where landlords are coming from.
It’s the old story of poor irresponsible tenants who spoil it for the good responsible tenants and yes also constant regulations from the government, which are meant to protect tenants from poor landlords, are used by rogue tenants to defraud and bankrupt landlords. This results in Landlords having to reject any tenants who are in the smallest way (including pet owning) a risk. I so hope you and your lovely dog do find the home you need.

So this is interesting as I do Airbnb (clearly stating no pets allowed) as well as being a landlord & night before last got a booking which i got back to them just to make sure they had read everything before I wound accept. He wrote back yes he’d read everything & by the way if I saw them with a dog, it’s not them breaking the rules as it’s an “assistance” dog. I wrote back saying no dogs are allowed in my contract/lease with the freehold. He wrote back & said it was illegal and sent loads of legal links. It was scary as he was clearly bullying me into accreting them. And he thought he had the right to just book without even telling me and bring a dog into my flat!! He actually said that to me. He said he dusty even have to inform me. I asked more questions and learned that it was an emotional support dog for someone with PTSD. Why on earth should I have to accept someone with a dog when I clearly state I can’t have dogs. This is getting insane. It’s my property filled with personal belongings including family heirlooms/photos etc. if someone is blind & needs an assistance dog ti get around, I do understand that this is not a choice for them. But there are properties out there that do allow pets. I told the guy that I too have PTSD (which I do) & that I took my last employer to court for discrimination under the Equality Act. That seemed to shut him up a bit. I would never ever just arrive at an AIRBNB with my pet without permission. Why should I just have the right to do this? I learned that real assistance dogs are in fact registered & have rigorous trading in which they are certificated. “Emotional assistance” pets are just pets Im afraid. You get no special treatment for this. I have two cats that have got me through some very seriously hard times, but that doesn’t mean I have a right to impose them on someone else’s property!! There needs to be some kind of registration through Openrent where they check the credentials of people claiming “assistance dog”. That term is just being thrown around now & I was just bullied by someone so arrogant to think they could do whatever they wanted with my property!! Not nice at all. It was clear that he was telling me he would take legal action if I didn’t accept their booking. What is going on with tenants & guests thinking they gave the absolute right ti do what they want?

That is shocking! I wouldn’t dream of bringing my dog if the owner had stated to the contrary. I really don’t know what is going on with people, but the arrogance is astounding.

If I do not want someone I just say " i cannot help you" I do not have to give a reason. If I do not want them then I do not have to say why

That sounds awful. Sounds like you stood your ground. You are correct in saying that there is a different legal treatment of registered guide dog for a blind person, which are protected under the 2010 Equality Act, versus an “emotional support animal” which has no legal protection. Unfortunately people conflate the two (usually when it suits them). You still have the right to refuse entry to your home/Airbnb on the basis that they broke the rules you set as conditional to staying in your place. What did you do in the end? I would be interested in knowing what, if anything, Airbnb had to say on the matter.

Airbnb Policy:

The problem was I was already in process of accepting him when he landed the bombshell. If he did have a registered assistance dog, I think it would be illegal to decline if the reason is because of the dog so I had to be super careful as I wasn’t sure yet if he did have an assistance dog. Nor was I sure what the law was.

Everyone is taking everyone to court for discrimination, yet we all discriminate in everything we do, it’s impossible not to. Weirdly a lot of people actually like being labelled with certain conditions as it allows them more freedom and exemptions and use it to manipulate. “It’s always someone elses fault and you need to adjust your behaviour to suit mine, else I’ll sue you”. Tragic times, we’re always just a few steps behind USAs deranged ways.
