I saw a rental on here. Got intouch with the landlord and viewed the property last Saturday. I have sent all the paperwork that she asked for - 3 months payslips, 6 months bank statements, a pdf of a full credit check and a photo of my driving licence. Also she emailed HR at work and my previous letting agents. Everything is good or excellent will all of those things. Since Monday I haven’t heard a thing from her, despite my emails, which have all been very polite. Am I being scammed here ? I’m very worried. She has so much info about me
Probably not, but its possible.
The landlord should have provided you with their privacy notice if they are obtaining that info which sets out how they will use the info.
Different landlords work in different ways, some will reference multiple potential tenants at same time so its possible they are waiting on other tenants references before making a decision although they should be clear on this.
Also possible landlord is just busy/slow to respond.
You have not sent any money to her?
No. She hasn’t asked for anything yet
May well be checking you out still. Employers can be slow in replying to Landlords ,if at all. Monday to now in that respect is not a long time. We are not all paper / internet crazy quick
My references replied to her the same day that she emailed them. I’ve sent her an email every day to ask for an update but got nothing back
Sending emails every day asking for an update will…just get in the way of doing any work to then be able to provide an update. If it’s urgent to get an answer pick up the phone and speak to someone don’t rely on emails. If it’s not don’t email every day. Comes across as very poor comms skills tbh.
Lots of emails re messages in OR go straight to spam/junk. So do normal emails as well.
Being a LL may not be their full time job. They may have other things going on in their life (health, family issues or whatever). Show a little bit of patience. Even if they have had the various info requested back they also need to spend time going through it. They may be doing viewings with others, getting things organized in the property (such as epc or gas certificate) or many other things. Could be waiting on a report from a referencing co.
Unless they have any passwords how do you think they could be scamming you, do you have any actual reason to suspect that?
Good luck
I’ve asked for her number on a couple of the emails, no reply. All I have is an email address
And LL may be reluctant to provide to avoid having calls every day from potential tenants like yourself.
I would send a single short email saying that if they want to continue then please to call you on (number) to update you on what’s happening, and to txt to arrange a suitable time for a call by end weds next week. And that by then it will be 10.working days. So if they can’t sort out by then organizing to call you at a mutually convenient time, you will withdraw your interest.
Hi, Diane8.
As a LL, I can get Tenant’s phone number through Open Rent. On the right of the message window I see “Request contact details”. If I click on this, it’ll give me both phone number and e-mail of the Tenant. Don’t know if it goes both ways. Have a look.
Thank you for that. I will give it a go. It may seem that I’m an annoying pest but a little bit of acknowledgement from the landlord would at least put my mind at rest…thank you
I can understand how you feel Not a pest at all
You may be onto something here. If a landlord wont give you a telephone number thats a red flag. If they hide behind an e mail now they may be difficult to contact during the tenancy.
Dont part with money keep looking.
It could be they are just giving priority to another applicant and you are the reserve , but no telephone number ?
No . I believe that you are not being scammed.
Unless you can provide any financial /further evidence to actually support that particular accusation and claim.
I could fully explain why, but I do not have to.
Perhaps you have been rejected in terms of any acceptable qualfiying procedure?
The Landlord or acting Agent does not legally need to provide any reason to you, other than non-correspondence and dis-regard.
All appreciative and guided towards your own initial answers, disclosed on your forwarded initial application form/ investigation and in consideration of proposed changes in Leglislative changes.
Count yourself very lucky that you have not been charged for the inconvenience /costs and effort made in any of the landlords enquires which would have been chargeable to you, specifically, several years ago.
Rejection; is a hard and bitter pill to ever swallow.
Move forwards, to positive thinking or else decide to waste/ consume your entire life in a most negative manner /complaint/ lost cause that actually upholds no real substance, evidential legal value or further consideration.
You have been rejected , and your persuance of this lost cause opens you up to being forever legally persued by the Landlord/ Agent, should they wish and decide to do so.
Please do direct your life accordingly.
Explain how a telephone number will ensure that a perspective Tenant is not being scammed? If this “landlord” is a scammer, don’t you think it’s easier enough for them to get a throw away pay as you go, scam perspective tenants and just disconnect the phone number. Make it make sense. It’s very clear that The Landlord does not want to progress with the Tenants application.
After 9 days of waiting for a reply I received an email stating that they were sorry for late reply. Would i move in on 7th March as she was going on holiday for a month. Could I send my last wage slip and she would send me a link to pay her £1328.00 deposit.
No tenancy agreement or contract or phone number.
Yes I’ve now given up ![]()
Doubt very much you are being scammed, why else would she go through the trouble of validating your employment and carrying out affordability checks?
She may be awaiting a credit report on you, or may have decided you didn’t the suitability criteria.
If you have paid a weeks holding deposit you are entitled to have this refunded if the landlord pulls out, which they can do so at anytime until the tenancy agreement is signed.
Good luck ![]()
