Appalling elec test service

I paid 140 for the elec test, was given one date, then tester turned up a day early. The next morning I rang the number that had called me for access, was told it failed - no details. Was given another number to call, - ran them and was told that report would go to openrent. 2 days later rang that number again to ask about arranging whatever remedial work was required (still no report) and was given London number to call. Rang them and was asked for payment upfront for remedial work for which I have no details, having no report.
One week on, have asked openrent for a refund but they have said that contractor will get in touch.
I would like to terminate this issue with a refund, so I can start again. Do I have rights to a refund?

Firstly, it wasn’t 140, it was 169 :woman_facepalming:
Secondly - after two irate phone calls to the complaint line, they have agreed to refund.
Good result.

The whole EICR process is open to abuse by the trade and nothing but a licence to rip off landlords. Not saying that tenants shouldn’t have the security of knowing that the electrical installation in their home is safe - just the process sucks.

I’ve had two separate ones done. Caught out the ‘engineer’ in both cases. Unfortunately, there is no regulatory body to report them to unlike with Gas Safe.

EICR has to be done by a registered electrician
You repost them to the body they are registered with
You shouldn’t be using non licensed electricians for an EICR or anything in a rental for that matter

Neither NAPEIT or NICEIC are regulatory bodies. They are merely certificate issuers. This is exactly how they described themselves to me when I spoke to them about the issues with the EICR certs I had been issued and the claims made by the electricians about remedial work that had to be done. Both electricians I used were registered with one of these bodies.

I suggest you call them back
I had two electricians years ago make up a failed EICR
I had it passed by a third
I reported it to them
Neither are on their register

They will fob you off you have to keep trying
They have a complaints department
If your EICR is failed and in the same day it’s passed then you have clear evidence that your eicr provider is scamming you

I book two electricians on the same day and cancel one if I don’t need them
