Can a landlord charge tenants for writing reference letters for them?

One of my tenants requested a letter to say they live at the property as this is needed for their potential employer. Am I allowed to charge for preparing such a letter?

if they are a paid up to date good tenant I would do it for free. I have written letters for tenants for all manner of reasons

I’d be a bit suspicious of such a request. Who is the employer? Have you checked with them whether they have asked for this? Why can’t the tenant just show them a copy of the tenancy agreement?

I was advised by my brother who is a solicitor not to supply anything, let alone charge a fee.
He has said not worth the risk

I assume there is no existing written contract which leads to a letter. What about statements etc? Why would an employer need such letter?
If it is a geniune request - I certainly do not charge anything.
It will probaly take same time as posting here and reading replies

I guess I will go ahead and write the letter … I hope the tenant is a gentleman and he will not be using it for any other purposes …

i had a person who wanted to move area and needed a letter to give to a housing association. I wrote and they got the place . If you can help someone for a little effort ,why not . I would hope someone would do the same for me

One of my tenants recently requested a landlord reference letter as part of his citizenship application. It was a simple letter confirming how long he has been a tenant for, and that he has always paid rent on time. It took me less than 5 minutes and I did not charge him. I can’t see why I would deny this request or charge them for it. I have a good relationship with my tenants, and I feel this is part of the overall service I provide.

I personally ask a letter or some form of request from their employer to be to demand this officially , this will give you a piece of mind and clear any doubts.
