Closing TDS protection without hassle

Hi - first post here: my tenants departed on Sunday (well, 2 weeks earlier, but their contract ended Sunday), and they never paid the last month’s rent (the old “take it out of our deposit!” attitude). In the end they threatened me with potential action for a small admin error I’d made early on; via Citizens’ advice, which could have cost me £4500+, so I settled & returned half of their deposit, less some ££ for rent due.

Question: I need to close off their TDS protection, but it asks for a “Paid Tenant” amount, & if I put the full amount, they may see that & say, no you didn’t! But, it I put in LESS than the full amount, TDS will probably start a “dispute”, and may contact them to ask if they’re happy I returned less than the full amount. How can I win!

Just to say: I do not wish to dispute: I’ve settled & only made a minor loss. The ex-tenants have agreed in an email that the matter is closed now. Thanks in advance…

You have no choice about the figures you enter. They must be accurate. By the way, if your error was with the deposit protection, they will still have up to 6 years from the date it was taken to sue for a penalty.

I don’t understand. How have you repaid some of their deposit if you have not even settled it with the deposit company ? Have you paid out of your own pocket ?
