Current Landlord contacting New Landlord AFTER referencing complete

Hello

I have an upcoming tenancy agreement, arranged and signed through OpenRent, which starts in a few weeks. The referencing/checks are complete, deposit and first month rent paid and the conract is signed. We are just waiting to move in.

However, because of a late rental payment (due to cash flow problems) my current landlord is threatening to contact OpenRent and the New Landlord to warn them and to advise that the new landlord does not accept me as a tenant.

The exisitng landlord was contacted by OpenRent for referencing purposes. Do they have the contact details for my new landlord?

Can they new landlord cancel the contract despite it being signed?

I am very worried as I am really looking forward to the new tenancy and this has shocked me a bit.

Thank you

Hi

Your current landlord will NOT have the contact details of your soon to be landlord. The contact is through the referencing agency which if your current landlord was to give a bad reference I imagine it would be flagged in the referencing report although I don’t think it would scupper your plans to move on. It would look as though your present landlord wants you to stay. Anyhow, your soon to be landlord has accepted you regardless of any negative references and your tenancy is signed and all monies paid. You just have to pick up the keys when the time comes.
