I passed the affordability and previous landlord refrence and id checks but failed credit check . Emailed landlord to explain how I got into bad credit and explained this wouldn’t be a problem for himself regarding letting us become tenants have I done the right thing ? Been upfront and not lied
yes… being honest about your history is absolutely essential to laying a solid foundation for a good tenant/landlord relationship.
I’d always encourage you to tell the LL at the earliest opportunity that you are likely to fail a credit check. If they are not OK with this don’t try to convince them. You find out straight away and can move on without wasting your time. Many LLs will be OK with it if you have a genuine honest reason.
I agree with @tatemono be honest and build trust when entering any financial contract with someone else.
Not clear you actually were upfront in this case
If you’ve been upfront you will have told LL about the past credit issues before they found out through referencing, not after.
If you didn’t tell them before the referencing then they could quite reasonably consider you haven’t been upfront and reject you as a result of you lying by omission when making your application.

Just to clarify @Jo142, I was commending you on your honesty only. David is right that unless you told the LL before they ran the credit check, you weren’t up front. I can’t speak to that without knowing whether you did.
