OR hold on to initial rent 10 working days to protect tenants (from rogue LLs who don’t handover keys)
I think if you do nothing, then OR will likely pass it on to you - tenants can voluntarily pay rent early whenever they like so it would effectively count towards 2nd months rent.
I would ask OR to refund the excess amount H back to the council. @mod_harry may be able to help or contact OR support.
(I wouldn’t pay the excess amount H to the tenant if they then pay the amount of the 2nd month less the holding deposit amount H then as far as OR can tell the full rent has been paid for month 2. If you want to refund to council get OR to do it. )
The tenant will be able to request that any excess funds are returned to the payee. If they don’t do this, the funds will be passed to you with the initial rent after the move-in date.

the council were happy for me to return it to the tenant. It’s from some kind of finance company working with the council so they didn’t want it returned to them as it would have messed things up.
The tenant paid the holding deposit directly as OpenRent require.
I can hold it against future rent or return it to him as he prefers. Sounds like OpenRent will just pass it to me after the wait period.
My initial fear was that OpenRent would bounce the whole payment as it didn’t match which would have delayed and confused things.
For info, I don’t use OR for rent collection after the initial payment.
