Request for Legal Assistance Regarding Lodging Dispute

Hello,

I need some advice about a situation with my former landlady.

I moved to the UK a year ago and rented a room from a woman, but we never had a formal lease agreement. This summer, I planned to go back to my home country for a couple of months and asked if I could find someone to temporarily take over the room while I was away. She made a sarcastic comment about liking them and not wanting me back, and I told her that was fine—I didn’t plan to live with her forever.

At first, she said I could find someone, but then she changed her mind and decided to look for a permanent tenant herself. After that, her behavior became really strange and even racist, which made me feel unsafe. I ended up leaving early and stayed in an Airbnb.

A month later, she started claiming I owed her money for not giving a month’s notice, which isn’t true. I blocked her to avoid more drama, but now I’ve found out she sent a “letter before action” to my business address, saying I owe her money.

I’m worried about how this could affect my
Credit score in the UK, and I really don’t want her to win this. Could you please advise me on what to do next?

Thanks so much!

Sending the letter to your employer is harassment. You need someone to pick apart the sequence of events and exactly who said/did what, so I suggest you call Shelter for advice.

If she sends a letter to your residence it’s ok
Sending a letter to your employers address will be discredited by the courts
As unless she has your permission to use your employers address it makes it an invalid notice
