Rural ageism tenants

Retired couple looking to downsize, excellent rental record for 20yrs.
Recently rejected for a viewing of a property by an ageist email from the landlord (which we have filed)
which is falsely presumptuous.
Adequate funds,excellent credit rating etc.
Apparently this is common in UK.

Social service housing not applicable due to good income.
First time we have ever met this nasty, hurtful ageist attitude. Has any other tenant come across this in either rural or towns?

What exactly did they say?

Reply from an MP via his agent…
“…I am sure this property is not suitable for you,the staircase is extremely steep. There are numerous steps between the different rooms…Hence we would not feel comfortable having anyone live at the house that did not have excellent mobility”
The landlord has made a judgement about our ability to live in the house without allowing us to view and make our own judgement.
We wish to downsize, from the advert it appeared ideal. The house we are now renting is 4 beds,1 acre garden all managed by ourselves no outside help, neither of us on any medications and no disabilities plus this house also has steep staircase.
We found this email, very hurtful they have no medical qualifications to back up these perceptions, therefore it has to be ageism.

I think you will be hard pressed to prove that. He might say the same to family with young children. He has not said “because you are too old”

I don’t think you’re wrong to feel the way you do. I’m sorry this has happened

The LL was not discriminating more thinking about the potential liability, should anything go wrong.
At the end of the day the LL has the right because he owns it and could be on the way to jail
