Utility bills between tenancy periods

Hi :waving_hand:,

looking for advice please. Our tenants are moving out and we’re looking to sell the property so it will be empty for a short while. We will take over the utility bills but is there anything we can request from suppliers that will limit how much we’ll need to pay for this period where no one will be using any power or gas? Thanks.

You just need to look at the tarif to see if you are on a low ‘daily charge’ tarif. If you are, your bills will be minimalised, where no gas or electric is being used.

I’d agree with Karl, that you should change to a tariff that allows payment based on actual usage rather than a fixed monthly payment. My water company doesnt charge for void periods, so worth checking with yours. Council Tax will be the big cost, especially if your Council elects to charge double CT on empty properties.

If unfurnished and no works going on/no need for any water, Thames water don’t require an account so you could just not have it.

Ditto you can have gas and electric cut off.

Disadvantage is puts potential buyers off if eg can’t turn lights on or taps when viewing, which might be evenings, nor allows utilities to be checked if working even informally by a surveyor and they have to pay to reconnect.

Def wouldn’t continue a broadband connection tho

Good luck
