Cannot contact landlord

Hi, my tenancy was supposed to start today. I’ve paid my months rent and deposit and I’m supposed to be collecting the keys today to begin my tenancy but my landlord has been unresponsive for 12 days now. There’s no phone number only email addresses. Am I being scammed? She has ordered a fridge for me to have delivered for tomorrow but my tenancy starts today and I have no idea when or how to collect the keys etc.

Possibly unfortunately. Did you get proof of ownership and ID for the LL? Should be an address on the tenancy agreement as well.

If you paid through OpenRent the good news is they don’t hand over the £ for up to 10 working days after move in date and you should get you £ back if keys not handed over. If you did everything outside OR you should have been more careful.

Did you pay through Openrent or externally?

How much is the rent, and what have you paid so far?

Have you signed a tenancy agreement? Was this digitally via Openrent or some other way?

Did you view the property, and who met you there? Was this the Landlord or an agent? Do you know if the agent is reputable? Do you know who they are?

Yeah so I’ve paid everything via openrent and gone through all the relevent steps from paying deposit, referancing etc and paying a month’s rent upfront front. I went for a viewing for the same flat last year when it was on the market. Everything seems legit. She’s ordered me a fridge to be delivered tomorrow but I just can’t get hold of her and have no idea when or how to get the keys. She hasn’t responded in 12 days now and my tenancy starts today

She also has multiple properties that she is renting out via openrent. It’s just a lack of communication that’s concerning me. Especially since the tenancy starts today and I’m still twiddling thumbs

Given that you have been waiting so long, is the report listing option still visible on the openrent advert page? I’d be tempted to report to Openrent & see if they can help.

You may also be able to report a problem via your own login to openrent through the application process pages

@Wesley6 I agree with @Karl11 contact OR who will have a tel and can try calling. Could be LL ill. Could be your emails going to LL junk folder (or were you using OR messaging?). Sounds less likely to be a scam.

Once you get sorted get a tel contact from LL - you need it in case of emergency in the property
