Dispute over deposit

Landlord agreed for us to install fibre optic within the property at the start of the tenancy. This included a small wire that ran across the top of the hallway wall that was presumably glued to the top.

Estate agents and landlord inspected the result afterwards and agreed it was fine. We have routine inspections every three months and it was never brought up as an issue.

Now that we’re moving out they want to charge us to repaint the wall as it’s somewhat discoloured around the edges. I don’t believe this is justified as it was agreed previously, never subsequently raised, and is more than likely caused by the age of the flat itself.

Do I have an argument?

The usual practice when a landlord agrees to an installation such as yours, is that the tenant has to make good at the end any affected areas. Check your tenancy agreement to see if yours contains such wording. Otherwise it would be up to you to agree or not. If you choose not, then the deposit scheme will probably be asked to adjudicate.

It would also depend on how long you lived there and condition of paintwork when moving in. If it was due for redecoration anyway then landlord would struggle to take from deposit.
