Does Tenant need to give notice if section 21 served?

Does tenant need to give notice to end tenancy before the section 21 date , if section 21 served?

e.g. Tenancy periodic (monthly), Section 21 dated in approx three months time.
What happens if Tenant wants to leave in a months time? Do they still need to give notice as the leaving date is earlier than section 21 date? Thank you

Technically yes, but I would probably just let them go and make sure that there was correspondence on the point between us to support an assumption of surrender by operation of law if the legality of their tenancy status was ever called into question.
