Looks like @oatcake is being charged that at £1215 for consumer unit change for a 2 bed flat?
1800 a lot better than 2700. Still sounds a lot esp for the consumer unit replacement even tho including testing (you’ll need a new eicr - I’m guessing another 200 electricians have been charging ridiculous high for eicrs due to 5y surge ).and higher London prices. Get some other electricians round to give you quotes.
If you can get down to 1200 that’s probably OK I’d think given it’s London
Good luck
i have bought 8 way split load consumer units for around £100; When reading that long post I admit I lost interest and slid off my chair.
Surely this an enthralling tale?
I have gone to watch the paint dry ,it is more interesting.
This is what the report said under circuits -
Yeah, sorry for the length of the previous post and I don’t mind people having a laugh
. It’s just that this is like a foreign language to me as a novice which I guess is what the dodgier sparkies are likely to take advantage of. I was just trying to include as much info as I could. All I’m looking for is a concise and accurate form of words that covers all of the work needed so I can ask for quotes. The quote I was originally given seemed very high. You’ve helped me considerably reduce it but it still seems high which is why I need to know what to ask for to get further quotes. £25 for a label btw! Kinnell
.
Just get some electricians round give them a copy of the eicr and ask them to give you an itemised quote on what is needed to fix the issues plus cost of eicr when completed.
You could share with them a list of what the previous co advised needed doing, without the costs, as a guide, but it’s up to them to tell you when quoting
Ask them to say how many circuits the new consumer unit will have
We can’t see how many sockets need replacing etc. They will need to see the job in person to then give you a quote
Best
Is that not covered in point 6 of the long post I put up earlier?
Just get more quotes or we will fade away
“Geeeez , you only supposed to blow the b…y doors off.”"
I digress. So… taking a closer look at the page you sent…
You have 8 sockets in a Ring configuration. Hence the 2 x 2.5mm2 T+E, are these doubles or singles?
You have 18 lights as a radial circuit. (seems a lot, are there wall lights?)
You have a cooker as a radial circuit. with a socket as part of the Cooker Isolator switch in the Kitchen most likely.
You have a water heater - disconnected. - as a radial - why - was it condemned? OR The Power feed to the Gas Boiler if there is one was used instead of a HW tank and Immersion heater?
How is the water heated at present ? Gas combi boiler?
(radial - from the Fuse/MCB/RCBO out to the appliance and daisy chained to other fittings if necessary - typically lights)
(Ring - From Fuse/MCB/RCBO, out to fixture - daisy chained and then back to Fuse - a peculiar British concept apparently not how they do it ‘sur le Continent’ - its to spread the load) Usually a power socket circuit with a 32Amp rating.
The up shot is that you have 4 live circuits and 2 spares.
Main switch takes 2 spaces and Surge Protection another 2 then the circuit fuses 1 each with RCD’s / RCBO’s incorporated take a total of 6 if you want keep the spares for something. Total 10. (4+2+2+2)
So a bare Consumer unit box with empty 10 ways will be required. They are often sold pre-fitted with a main isolator switch of 100A with or without SPD, as it not mandatory just recommended. So that means a part populated Consumer unit with space for 6 other (or 4 ) circuits will do as well.
You dont need to worry about this really but need to be aware of your requirement when a sparky tries to pull the wool over your eyes. Nor do you really need Surge protection - hence why its marked as a C3 on the Observations list. - Its a ‘nice to have’ IMHO.
All in all this is a very modest electrical requirement typical of a small 2 bed flat IMHO.
I could rewire it in a lunchtime.
Jeez ive spent a long time on this forum - i must get a life !
But the report from the co includes mention of other circuits not protected by an rcd which need to be
"10. Circuit supplying bath/shower location with no 30 mA RCD protection – Included within consumer unit replacement works
Issue:
A circuit supplying a location containing a bath or shower has no 30 mA RCD protection."
(And others).
So the description of circuits in the current consumer unit doesnt tell us how many others are needed? Or how or where those circuits are currently wired and how much work is needed to connect them to a new consumer unit.
Sounds like more than a straight replacement of existing consumer unit?
Supposing you replace in your long lunchtime presumably you also would charge for a new EICR too?
Are you a qualified electrician based in London what would you charge for the whole job?
Best
The EICR sparky Co mean the lighting circuit in a Zone 1,2 or 3 area is not on circuit that is currently protected by a RCBO.
When the new C/U is installed EVERY circuit will have RCD protection. 40millisecond and 30mA trip.
If, for example, there was an electric shower in the bathroom over the bath that would be the ‘other’ circuit and it would also need to be upgraded to RCD
Hope that helps.
RCD and RCBO are interchangeable as terms
Its goodbye from me and its goodbye from him

Well I have the qualification but nope am not biting. This is again one of those cases where the poor LL gets railroaded into shelling out what could have been £2700 where a lot less would be more realistic. How much less, i dont know, I would need to be on site.
Ever heard of cable cancer ? a green goo? If there is any of that then its a condemned installation.
Sounds like an STD… ![]()
Everybody wants to be a millionaire these days…! ![]()
so… I’ve just come in… what are you guys talking about?
@tatemono my attempt to summarize
@oatcake north London received a quote for new consumer unit and other fixes following a EICR of 2700. After getting advice here & questioning /requesting itemised reqs reduced to 1800. Still seems a lot so @oatcake asking for help specifying what’s needed. @Ray12 says it should be much less needs a standard set up and he could replace the consumer unit in his lunchtime, but has declined to quote citing green goo and needing to see in person. People here have advised getting other quotes. Some of the posts have got too long (guilty moi). Paint has dried.
Best
Its not all its cracked up to be . This mattress is very lumpy
