The banter on this thread is just electric
That’s just shocking
At least we are all switched on
But if it carry s on much longer I will blow a fuse.
I’m not at the property at the mo so can’t count sockets, lights, etc. but I can do this at the weekend so you can look forward to an update you lucky people
.
Pretty sure there aren’t 18 lights though.
As for the boiler, there is a gas combi boiler. It’s a new one and the guy installing it did say something about the power supply to it being labelled strangely when he replaced the old one but it went over my head a bit tbh.![]()
So what am I asking for on Checkatrade? I’ve asked for quotes for a 6 way cos that’s what I figured it was but this new 10 way thing has confused me again. Everyone interested in the job wants a pic anyway which I’ll send them over the weekend.
@oatcake as there are other circuits mentioned that need to be connected and good to have a spare or two, I’d suggest you ask for an 8 way or 10way
Given the age of the wiring I think people might well want to come and take a look anyway, like @Ray12 has implied
Not clear whether it’s just the external sockets need replacing plus a couple of others /back boxes or how many. If the sockets are old /plastic cracked or discolored you may want to replace anyway even if not needed for safety reasons…
Need to specify if isolation fuses / protection need adding for bathroom circuit and oven or if there’s an electric shower
Worth thinking about the order of doing stuff if you are going to be decorating
Personally altho you can ignore c3s they are recommended I’d get those fixed at same time if not much more cost
Best
also a split board so you may not lose all power if a fault develops
Well I’m getting a buzz from it… ![]()
I’m splitting feathers to pass the time until the next post from the OP. ![]()
Posted a new thread asking about MyConstructor.co.uk
I definitely wouldn’t go with the original sparky…their second quote is still expensive, they’re trying it on and padding out the written quote . Avoid.
Wrong, Just needs an up to date C/U which will have split load RCD’s or will have individual RCBO’s so all circuits are protected - All lights -Bathroom lights, bedrooms ,lounge lights, all sockets, Boiler feed (marked water heater) and cooker.
No electric Shower, No other isolation needed, No external sockets - I summise its a ground floor flat with Front door, patio or side door from hall or lounge to a garden or yard. (or upper floor with a balcony) There is a socket near or right next to this entrance which could conceivebly be used by someone to plug in a tool or appliance for use outside. The C/U with RCD will cover off this requirement for circuit protection.
As I previously said - 90% of the upgrade required will be accomplished by a ‘lunchtime’ swap out of the old C/U (size 4 circuits + 2 spares) it would seem from the report pages I have seen here.
@oatcake will need to get advice/ gen up about mains powered interlocking smoke/ heat alarms if not already fitted - thats one spare used up. Kitchen,Hall and lounge if he is intending on Renting out. - My mistake -Wireless ones are now available which negates the need for unsightly trunking.
Ray, you’ve been a diamond brother as has David. Thank you. Without boring anyone with another monster post, suffice to say that I’ve just accepted a quote for £700 + VAT all in.

The hardware for this matter is £1.69 if bought singly.
The labour is however long it takes to undo the old scruched up label and fit a new one.
Its the embossed aluminium one that you see under bathroom and kitchen sinks wrapped around copper pipes. If its missing its a C2 code.
Hope you have learnt something about the extremely technical world of household wiring. !!
Best
@Ray12 well we were all surmising exactly what’s needed without visiting the place. You mentioned the possibility of green goo for example. But you are more likely to be right than me given your qualifications…
@oatcake hurrah.
Fingers crossed for you they don’t show up and on viewing tell you there are a bunch of extras needing doing…
Make sure it includes the cost of a new EICR
Good luck
So we’ve gone from £2700 down to £1885 now potentailly down to £840 – I DO love a bargain

You will be required to have the latest18th edition consumer unit.
Be warned, I was quoted over £1k five years ago for just ONE consumer unit replacement. I put a tender out and get an electrical engineer to replace TWO consumer units in TWO DIFFERENT properties, for £998
