Yes, of course. If the tenant lied in their application, you may also be able to keep the holding deposit.
Yes of course. Accepting the deposit is not a commitment to then rent to someone
If they cant afford it, their ID cant be verified or eg they have bad credit history and didnt tell you, why would you rent to them? If the people proposed dont match what they told you or basicslly anything at all is suspicious and you cant get a good answer - find someone ekse
Note the Openrent referencing report doesnt cover everything eg it doesn’t include right to rent which you need to do separately. Ditto OR wont check if your property is in an area needing a license or if it is an HMO.

This is useful, do you know where I can get the right to rent report from? Currently, I am waiting on the full report.
@Shayan you may be able to do yourself (it’s easy if they have a Home Office share code) or pay a letting agent or others to do it
